YDEF Retinopathy 2015: the trainee perspective

On the 7th-8th December 2015, 22 trainees attended the YDEF Retinopathy course in Birmingham. This was a well received and enjoyable event and below is a short overview of the day from one of the attendees.

Early in December last year just over 20 diabetes specialist registrars, from around the country, congregated at Heart of England's Diabetic Eye Screening Centre for the 4th YDEF "Diabetic Retinopathy and Screening for Diabetologists". This was once again oversubscribed and looks set to be a firm fixture in the YDEF calendar. I was about to find out why.

Junior doctor contract: contract to be imposed

Following the latest strike action on Thursday 11th February 2016, Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State announced his decision to impose the new junior doctors contract in England.

YDEF are disappointed and dismayed by this imposition. We stand with the BMA (and our members) in objecting to such methods and the proposed contract.
The coming few weeks and months will be crucial to the future of the NHS and our profession. We continue to urge our members to keep up to date with events. Please take some time to read the latest developments below.

Junior doctor contract

As most of you may be aware, there has been a lot of concerns regarding the proposed change to junior doctor's contract by the government and the Review Body on Doctor's and Dentist's Remuneration (DDRB). Social media and more recently national press have been highlighting the concerns on a regular basis. There have been various statements from the Royal Colleges and the British Medical Association and we would like to keep our members up to date on current events that will no doubt have a significant effect on the profession (and ourselves). Please take some time to have a look at some of the links below to keep yourself well informed.

The YDEF have added the voice of D&E trainees to the BMA response. We welcome and celebrate Scotland and Wales' decision not to impose a new contract and call for our government to review their proposals based on transparent, evidence-based negotiation

Uniquely, the explanatory answers include references to guidelines and other sources to enable candidates' further reading and study.

Further more, all royalties are going towards a charity 'Pratham' for underprivileged children in India.

The Royal College of Physicians has launched a new resource for physicians that decodes the often complex world of commissioning, contracting, and payment systems in the NHS in England.

The new resource is the first in a series of practical tools to support physicians to influence the commissioning system that governs the way their services are designed and delivered.
